Description

Slow Blues featuring a challenging solo part for the Baritone Saxophone.  The Octet’s parts, in comparison, are relatively simple, but play an important supporting role for the soloist, providing a gradual crescendo throughout the piece – this is achieved by a measured broadening of the texture, starting in unison, then two, then three culminating in 4 part harmony.  Trumpet and Trombone need a plunger mute to extend expressiveness.  Twelve bar section

A rhythm, B unison, C two part harmony, D three part harmony, E quieter – using Brass ‘Wha-Wha and dynamic level drops, F four part harmony and climax – the Baritone plays continuously throughout, no rests!

An expanded version of this piece was broadcast on BBC Radio 2 with Jay Craig (Baritone Saxophone) and BBC Radio Big Band.
